Through conversations with fellow new Londoners it became clear, the term between here and there, was common to all of us. Further reading of Homi K Bhabha and Julia Kristeva confirmed the common theoretical usage of this term and therefore alludes to the two components of this project. The book entitled - there, and the portraits entitled - here.
Maintaining two very separate forms of representation in this project sets up a similar dialogue to Rosler's work, The Bowery in Two Inadequate Descriptive Systems (1974), whereby image and text come together to highlight the inadequacies of documentary photography to communicate a full account of the documentary subjects experience or story.
In this work, the systematic collection of text, private vernacular imagery and formal portraiture come together and in turn speak of a non-representable place that is in between.
